Christmas, Halloween and RPM Teamup announced!

Marvista Entertainment and Saban Brands will debut three new Power Rangers Samurai TV specials (2x30, 1x60), based on the new TV series of the same name. Featuring the Samurai Rangers, the new specials include:

Christmas Together, Friends Forever - the Rangers reflect on their first year together as a team and learn about the spirit of the season.

Party Monsters - a scare-fest when the creepiest monsters from beyond get together for party and trade stories about their battles with the Rangers.

The Clash of the Red Rangers - a crossover special where the Samurai Rangers team with the mysterious RPM Rangers Red fend off the dual threat from Master Xandred's Mooger army and robotic super-villain from the RPM Ranger's dimension. When something goes awry, the two Red Rangers turn on one another and the fate of the world hangs in the balance.

“The new Power Rangers Samurai specials are a perfect fit for the international markets ongoing demand for event-driven programming which offers broadcasters additional opportunities to cross promote,” said Fernando Szew, the CEO of MarVista Entertainment. “The new season of Power Rangers continues to generate stellar ratings as it launches around the world, and we are pleased to be in a position to continue to build upon the brand by offering dynamic and fresh new content to our partners.”

The date to air these are not announced yet, most likely we will be seeing these Halloween and Christmas specials this year. It is great news that the RPM Rangers are from another dimension, explaining the whole post-apocalyptic thing. So this explains suspensions that they were filming a RPM teamup, and why Mike's actor Hector was communicating via Twitter to the actress who played Tenaya.

Power Rangers: Almost Canceled?

The following are speculations and rumors and nothing confirmed, the only one that was for sure was that Disney was quitting on Power Rangers by 2010. These are rumored instances of when Power Rangers was 'almost canceled.'

By Season 3, Power Rangers' ratings started to decline but Toy sales remained high enough to make the show profitable to all the companies involved. It was said that Big Bad Bettleborgs beat PR in the ratings for a short time. They then decided to change the name, suits, everything except most of the cast for Zeo and ratings were better.

The first half of Turbo had low ratings and sequel got mixed reviews and not a whole lot of profit, leading the crew to think their time was almost up. But the second half of Turbo had better ratings and led them to do In Space. They got Judd Lynn to lead the way for the second half, old plots were abandoned (like Divatox/Dimitria), no more Lerigot, and 4 new castmembers. I don't know if Fox Kids threatened them to cancel them or not.

A lot of evidence leads fans believe the crew thought Power Rangers in Space was the final season was because of the bringing together of old villains, the search of Zordon and of course the finale--that brought together Blue Senturion, Phantom Ranger, Gold Ranger and the Aquitar Rangers and the destruction of all known villains. But because of high ratings, the crew was led to make another season. I think by this season, they were expecting to just close up shop and wasn't threatened to be cancelled. Bandai did help with the budget for the Battlizer and continued to do so.

Lost Galaxy was also thought to be the last season, Saban was only producing Mystic Knights. Mystic Knights, the first live-action Saban did that had no existing Japanese Tokusatsu footage was to have a second season but they opted not to do it and all the budget was allocated to the second part of Lost Galaxy. Ratings were passable for Lost Galaxy so they continued. They had a lot of budget for Lightspeed, ratings were great for Lightspeed and Time Force. To give you an idea of the budgets, I made the chart above. 1995-1996 was the only time they had 3 shows filming at the same time: Season 3 of MMPR, VR Troopers Season 2, and Masked Rider. While Turbo, Space and Lost Galaxy ran in the course of one year and not between two years, Beetleborgs and Mystic Knights ran between two years, from September to Spring. Also, Beetleborg monsters were used for seasons of Power Rangers starting with 'In Space' and also Mystic Knights.

Rumor is that Jungle Fury was going to be the last season because it was the last one Disney really promoted and it was the last one to air on Toon Disney. When Toon Disney became Disney XD, Power Rangers was knocked out and new episodes only aired on ABC. RPM got no promotional photos like past Disney seasons, almost no promotion, very little merchandise (save for the toys) and it was rumored that the only reason they did RPM was because Bandai released the toys. Judd Lynn swears Disney did care about PR during RPM, I believe at least at a production standpoint. Even though not officially 'canceled' since MMPR reversion aired in 2010, production did stop in New Zealand and Disney was in conversations to sell it back to Saban. It is rumored Bandai helped with the budget, not for new Rangers or Battlizers, just for budget all together. So Power Rangers was never officially canceled but ratings did get low and there was rumors of it being 'the end.' The closest thing to being 'canceled' was the 5 months between the reversion being off the air (in September) to when Power Rangers Samurai premiered in February.

Henshin0's feelings over PR streaming on Netflix

When I read the article about Netflix streaming this "tomorrow" (today by now), you couldn't believe my ecstasy. This is one time where being an insomniac is a good thing, because lying on your bed, you start to realize, "Wait, it's midnight.....POWER RANGERS ARE STREAMING ON NETFLIX NOW!" And I got a first look, and it rocked my world. First of all, the graphics of older footage has slightly improved (the way you think MMPR revisioned would have, before you actually saw it), and at the end of the episodes of all of the shows, even the Disney seasons, they use the new Saban logo, like the one they use at the end of "Samurai". Since I didn't sleep at night, I spent the whole night watching "Zeo", and thanks to the digital remastery, I noticed things I didn't notice before even when they aired it on Jetix.

First, in the zord garage, you can see the initials "U.A.O.H." from Zeo's Japanese counter-part, "Ohranger". Also, in the power chamber, where they have capsules containing the MMPR suits, Yellow ranger's suit (are you ready for this) has a skirt. What ironic timing to notice it, when gokaiger is airing in Japan. I also noticed a few less impressive things like the rangers wearing turtle-necks......a lot, and subtext about David Yost, but that's not important. Who knows what other things I will just start to notice in other old season, but whats really cool, is the fact that it's on netfix, means that via desktop, laptop, TV internet, and iPhone, I can literally spend the whole day watching non-stop Power Rangers. Although, there are a few things you should know. First, they're not streaming Mystic Knights, or Masked rider, and second, MMPR-R is considered S-19 on Netflix, not S-18, while "Samurai" is considered 18, but isn't on netflix at all, even though the cast list is on the site.

THANK YOU SABAN FOR POTENTIALLY MAKING ME COMPLETELY ANTI-SOCIAL BY HAVING ME RELIVE MY CHILDHOOD MEMORIES ABOUT OVERGROWN TEENAGERS IN SPANDEX.......and body armor......and whatever Dr. K. said her RPM suits were made of.

How the Sixth Rangers related to the other Power Rangers?

Here I compare how the Sixth Rangers got along with the main team and if they were accepted or not. It's much different to how the Sixth Rangers were accepted in Super Sentai.

Tommy and the Power Rangers
This is my opinion and with the first Sixth Rangers, the first season writers didn't want to much arc-related stuff, just and alone episodes so kids could pick up on what was going on, so having too much conflict would be confusing but once they realized the multi-parters made ratings go up, they made more. So yeah Tommy got along with the gang. And like said by Linkara, just because he lost his powers, it didn't mean he had to disappear from school. And where did he go? We know in Season 2 from between he lost his powers and he became the White Ranger, he was at his Uncle's. Green Ranger's powers were limited.
Evil, instantly joined: 1

Jason and the Zeo Rangers
Trey and the Zeo Rangers
Since he already knew the gang, he instantly joined and they had no conflicts. Jason had to give his powers back to Trey, who was a mysterious helper.
Trey--Mysterious Helper: 1
Joined team instantly: 1

Phantom Ranger and the Turbo Rangers
He never really gave his real name and the gang called him 'Phantom Ranger.' All they knew was that he came from Eltar. He was fairly friendly with them, even as much to help them when they are Space Rangers. Where in Sentai VRV Master is not considered a Ranger and seemingly not going to get a Ranger Key for Gokaiger, he was marketed as a Sixth Ranger and giving the 'Ranger' title in Power Rangers. His powers were limited because of the Power Ruby.
Mysterious helper: 2

Zhane and the Space Rangers
They instantly accepted him as he was Andros' old friend. There was some time that they had to get know him. He got friendly with Ashley, which made Andros jealous. And Andros hearing that Zhane had a thing with Karone, his sister, wasn't exactly stellar. But other than that, he instantly joined with no problems. His powers were limited for a while.
Joined team instantly: 2

Mike and the Galaxy Rangers
Even though confirmed as just an Extra Hero in Super Sentai, Mike was treated as a Sixth Ranger, even given a Morpher, Mike was instantly accepted. Strangely enough, in the two-parter, Damon barely knew him and was shouting out for him. He had to give up his power at the end.
Joined team instantly: 3

Ryan and the Lightspeed Rangers
The Titanium Ranger was the first non-Sentai Ranger, he was evil for a brief time and then accepted, he then went on his own mission to find out how to stop the demons, probably because he had no footage, so lots of money to make new footage. Anyway, he was fully accepted to the team. With maybe only conflict with his dad, as he had a cobra that would kill him as he morphed and didn't tell his dad. He had limited powers because of the cobra curse.
Evil, instantly accepted: 2

Eric and the Time Force Rangers
Antagonistic towards Time Force, he wasn't an evil ranger but he didn't want to join the team. He was looking out for himself. Well, if the four Rangers joined the Silver guardians, he would've be okay with being their leader then. Even though Wes liked him, he didn't, not until the end where they became a duo. His powers weren't limited like past Rangers, it was more of a moral and dramatic choices that led to him not being in every single episode since his debut or be part of the team.
Antagonistically, didn't want to join: 1

Merrick and the Wild Force Rangers
He was part of the original team and was cursed to be Zenaku. When the current Rangers saved him, he became Lunar Wolf Rangers but felt bad about all he did so he didn't want to join the team. He later ended up wandering the Earth with Zenaku of all people. His powers weren't limited like past Rangers, it was more of a moral and dramatic choices that led to him not being in every single episode since his debut or be part of the team.
Lone wolf: 1

Thunder Rangers and Wind Rangers
Instead of having the Goraijer's backstory, they were duped into being 'evil,' and were told the Sensei killed their parents but it was Lothor. Once this was cleared up, they instantly joined the team and almost had zero conflict, save for one episode with Shane.
Evil, then joined eventually: 3

Cam and the Ninja Storm Rangers
Unlike Shurikenger who was a mysterious helper, Cam was already part of the team. His powers weren't limited like Rangers before Time Force. They did conflict with Cyber Cam.
Joined team instantly: 4

Trent and the Dino Rangers
Even though there was just four Dino Rangers and Triassic is not counted as a sixth ranger but an upgrade, AbareKiller is consider a Sixth Ranger by Gokaiger. Trent was under evil control and was evil against the Rangers, then cured and instantly joined the team, but that didn't mean there still wasn't conflicts. He kept secrets from them. And then there was the evil clone, made to excuse the footage of AbareKiller still being antagonistic against them.
Evil, then joined instantly: 4

Sam and SPD
When Sam came in as Omega Ranger, he came with an attitude that future stuff was better. Fans found him annoying.
Joined team instantly but some head butts: 1

Daggeron and Mystic Rangers
Xanderis a bit jealous and upset at Daggeron but later turns around. Nick butts heads with Daggeron occasionally (even to the point that Snow Prince downgraded Daggeron and had him follow Nick.
Joined team instantly but some head butts: 2

Tyzonn and the OO Rangers
Mac instantly likes Tyzonn. Tyzonn doesn't want to join the team because of guilt of loosing friends in a team before. But once he gets the powers, he does join the team and with zero conflict, the only conflict he had with Will was that he followed him around, copying him.
Joined team eventually: 5

RJ and the Jungle Fury Rangers
They all knew RJ before as he was the teacher but he did butt heads with Casey when he became a Ranger because Casey felt like he was stepping into the leader role.
Joined team instantly but some head butts: 3

Dominick and the Jungle Fury Rangers
He wanted to be accepted but wasn't for his laziness and arrogance, it took Casey to kind of accept him.
Wasn't accepted instantly: 1

Spirit Rangers and Jungle Fury Rangers
Evil, but eventually joined, sort of: 5

Ziggy and Dillon and RPM Rangers
Unlike Go-Onger, there was mass amounts of conflict with Ziggy and Dillon and the others. Dillon conflicted with everyone. Nobody wanted Ziggy. But we all know how that turned out.

Twins and RPM Rangers
Instantly joined, the main 5 didn't get them but they were part of the team.
Joined team instantly: 6

Antonio and Samurai Rangers
He wanted to join but wasn't accept by the Samurai Rangers. He was quickly accepted by three of them but not much by Kevin and Jii. Jayden and Jii later accepted him but it took an episode for Kevin to accept him.
Wasn't accepted instantly: 2

Joined team instantly: 6
Wasn't accepted instantly: 2
Evil, but eventually joined: 5
Joined team instantly but some head butts: 3
Antagonistically, didn't want to join: 1
Lone wolf: 1
Mysterious helper: 2

Power Rangers reference in Gokaiger Episode 5

Koichi Sakamoto is the current stunt director of some episodes (corrected, thank you, I got it wrong) of Gokaiger, having produced Power Rangers up to RPM (stunt director starting from season 3). He said on his blog that there would be a PR reference in Episode 5. Fans believe this reference could be in that when the Gokaiger become Go-Onger, they use the wheel cuffs as weapons as the Go-Onger didn't use them as such.

But in RPM, they did use the cuffs as weapons. Couldn't find a pic of it, but did find this one above of the colors running through their tire boot cuffs, which didn't happen in Go-Onger.

UPDATED 3/25/11 10PM EST

I forgot to mention that when the Gokaiger became the Dekaranger, the manner that their helmets changed was a possible nod to SPD, because in the way it happened did not happen in Dekaranger but only in Power Ranegrs SPD.

Shipping and Androgyny in Tokusatsu Fandom

WARNING YOU MIGHT NOT AGREE WITH THE FOLLOWING
I am NOT saying I am a large expert on these things, nor I want to appear as if I am an expert.

Two Definitions:
Shipping is a term use in the fandoms taken from the word 'Relationship' and 'to ship' is to create a relationship out of two fictional characters. Shipping means to group two characters (from Television, Films, Books, etc.) into a relationship, if implied or not. Many times fans 'ship' two characters together that seem to have no romantic connections at all (you may not agree).
Androgyny is a word derived from the Greek words άνδρoς (andros, meaning man) and γυνή (gyné, meaning woman). Andros, funny, eh? Androgyny usually refers to a person that looks like a mix of both genders: feminine and masculine and aren't so easy to identify. Androgynous people are usually common in fashion. In Japanese pop culture including Tokusatsu (more specifically Super Sentai and Kamen Rider), there are many androgynous-looking characters or cast members.

Ryosuke [Miura Ankh/Shingo Izumi on Kamen Rider OOO]

And this topic has to do with those terms. This topic started in my head while reading comments American fans write on boards about certain actors. For years, many fans have called androgynous-looking men on Sentai and Kamen Rider women. It is a cultural thing. Even in Japan, androgynous is not an accepted thing. Mostly the younger generation finds it stylish. I want to make it clear that this is not about sex but it is about GENDER. There is a distinct version between sexual orientation, sex and gender, many people confuse it all together. The main problem is because majority of the world doesn't have the education about it. Many people may scoff at the notion of needing education on quote-end-quote 'gay stuff' but come on, in reality, most people just hear about it on 'the streets.'

Hirofumi Araki (Rio) from Gekiranger

Gender basically is split into the binary. The binary refers to two sides, there is just two categories. These two categories being masculine and feminine. They are societal norms established by a consensus in culture on what is masculine and what is feminine. For example, if a man or woman likes shopping, fashion, wearing long hair and cooking, it is usually lumped into feminine. These gender norms that were established change from time to time. Because look at England and the United States back in the 1700's, the norm for men were to dress in powdered wigs and pantaloons. Now that is considered feminine. And young men dressing as women on the stage was common, as women weren't allowed to be stage actors. There is also Rule 63, a urban meme that says for every male character, there is a female equivalent or version of him.

The picture above was made fun of by English-speaking fans, especially Hirofumi Araki (Rio), because he looks like a woman. I hate the taunting of men that may look 'feminine.' I personally believe that the social norms or what is expected of men in America (including South and North) is very very narrow. If a man bends his wrist, he's gay. If a man shakes his hips when he is walking, he's gay. If he has long hair and looks similar to a woman, then he's gay. Remember when only women could wear earrings? Now plenty of men wear earrings. And don't get me started on Pink once again, as I believe the color has nothing to do with gender but many cultures (including Japan's and ours) have united pink and femininity together and it has only been done for the past 60 years, compared to the said million years of human existence.

Shō Tomita (Yukito from Abaranger)

So if I got to say it, I'll say it. If a man dresses as a woman, it doesn't mean they are gay. Transgender people are not gay. For example, a 'transgendered' individual is like a person born as a man and feels like they were born in the wrong body and dresses in the opposite gender in order to have society see them as they feel inside. They could be attract to the opposite sex, say a man to woman transgender would be attracted to a man, or they could be bisexual. And a crossderesser is a man who likes to dress in dresses, and can be either gay or straight. And there are gay men that are Drag Queens, who dress as women from time to time for a show, but consider themselves men not women. Same thing for Drag Kings, women (either straight or lesbian) that dress as men. For me, sexuality is fluid, it is ever changing. And gender, in a way, also is. Fluidity meaning it changes all the time, it depends on a person and not everything stays the same. Okay I digress.

This shipping discussion about the actors who play Captain Marvelous and Doc from Gokaiger, started because of various pictures of them together. Some people joked that they were gay and some other people wanted to 'ship' or group these two characters together. I am doing this to fan the flames, I am not thinking I will 'fix' anything or 'save' anything. Some loyal fans on my blog say I, myself, am good at calming down the fandoms and creating peace. I don't know about that, nor do I claim any large responsibilities like that. I am NOT saying I am a large expert on these things, nor I want to appear as if I am an expert. I will handle this two ways. NUMBER ONE: To those who honestly believe these two actors are gay and in love. Who are we to speculate on the sexual orientation of two actors? There is nothing confirmed. In the Toku fandom, only ONE actor has come out as gay and that is David Yost. And no Japanese actor has ever come out of the closet or said they are gay. In Japan, they rarely talk about it. There is openly gay people, but not actors. There is stigma over openly gay actors in the US and there is way more taboo in Japan.

NUMBER TWO: For those fans that have no problem with gay people but would still like to 'ship' these two guys (either the actors or characters), it is fun to speculate and you can ship all you want (I am not a law man) but saying they ARE indeed in a relationship is a little too much. Because on the internet, it quickly becomes true and law. That is how gossip starts. It is a double standard that when women pose in a picture and appear close, it is normal but when two men do it, then they are pinned as gay.

On the subject of 'shipping', the 'shipping' by fans about Dillon and Ziggy comes to mind. Actor Daniel Ewing has said in an interview with No Pink Spandex that he didn't like the pairing, and not because he is homophobic but because he would quote 'crush him' physically. Saying that he was too big for Ziggy, that he is too skinny and small. He found a pairing with Scott or Flynn more feasible physically. That is just funny. By the way, being homophobic means you don't like gay people, not that one is 'scared' of gay people. Also, you can be homophobic if you are discriminatory in a vicious manner towards a person not fitting in societal gender norms (for example making fun of a male actor for looking 'fem' or 'queer').

By the way, the poll on sexual orientation is to prove to my mother that Toku DOES NOT have gay subliminal messages, she thinks it does. She also thinks Sailor Moon has gay subliminal messages.

Music Video - Black and Yellow

It was inevitable. I haven't done a music video in a while and thought this was appropriate. This includes Masumi/Bouken Black and Natsuki/Bouken Yellow; Dillon/Ranger Black and Summer/Ranger Yellow from RPM; Moune/Gosei Yellow and Argi/Gosei Black. And a little surprise.

Can Saban really reclaim the exact height of past popularity of Power Rangers?

I sort of have been avoiding this conversation but the more media outlets that have been covering the premiere of Power Rangers Samurai, they are calling it a 'comeback' or an attempt to 'regain the former splendor' and I feel compelled to say something now. Some incorrectly say Saban is making a comeback, as if he always owned it and it hasn't been on the air for 15 years. Some get it right that Saban acquired the franchise back from Disney after selling it in 2002. I, as a long time fan, have been reminding people Power Rangers is quote 'still around' since Lightspeed Rescue (2000). Kids still know its around, it is still a staple (important element). If parents have taken their children to the Disney Store or Disneyworld in the past 8 years, they would know Power Rangers was still around. But what I had not realize that these non-fans and people who haven't been aware of it have, is they mean that Power Rangers haven't been in as in the height popularity of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers back from 1993 through 1995 (During Season 3, popularity waned).

Another thing that hurt the franchise has been the lack of visibility. Disney buried it, on channels that not everyone had. They had it from 2003 to 2005 on ABC Family--which wasn't as big as it is now, and then moved it to Toon Disney, which not everyone has on their cable plan. Once it became Disney XD, they kicked off Power Rangers and buried Power Rangers RPM (Season 17) to ABC. Some local affiliates of ABC refused to show it as it doesn't reach education requirements and some put it at 5 in the morning (like in my area of Miami). Disney thought when they sold it to Saban, he was going to put it on another channel that wasn't Nickelodeon, but it is now on Nick. And putting it on Nick instead of NickToons is smart, like if Disney had put Power Rangers on the Disney Channel. NickToons is the equivalent of ToonDisney/Disney XD and it will be airing repeats soon enough.

So do I think Power Rangers will return to its former glory? I personally believe that with Disney, merchandise-wise, it picked up a lot of vendors. It was very visible in stores like Wal-Mart and Disney Store (well, in later years they buried their PR section). But I don't think it will completely be like it was back when, but it will be better than it was with Disney or when it waned in popularity. Saban Brands is definitely embracing technology, like iPhones, Twitter, Facebook and from what I hear, Netflix--hopefully. What fans are hoping for are DVDs. I am looking forward to this, all fans are giddy to all these new things. So in short, I do think Power Rangers will have more visibility and be popular with kids. There is no doubt about kids loving Power Rangers (I am an elementary school teacher and see kids under 8 still playing Power Rangers). Many kids that grew up with the first season are adults like us, but I suppose just a fringe amount. Maybe it won't be as 'big' as a cultural phenomenon with adults older than 40.

"Video games for Nintendo Co.’s Wii and DS will be released this year, and a movie may follow in time for the live-action series’
20th anniversary in 2013, Dekel said." Fans were wondering about the 20th anniversary, it seems it will be following the 20 years and not 20 seasons, like past anniversaries counted seasons. Where Power rangers Samurai has been considered by fans as Season 18, some sources quote it as 19, counting the MMPR Reversion in 2010 as Season 18.
